Ashtanga Yoga is one of the most powerful and effective system of Yoga. Nowadays the Ashtanga yoga tradition is preserved by R. Sharath Jois, the director of the K. Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute in Mysore. The KPJAYI was established by Sharath`s grandfather Shri K. Pattabhi Jois (Gurugi), the closest student of Shri T. Krishnamacharya.
This yoga method includes the complete system of yoga positions (asanas) and dynamic movements (vinyasas) synchronized with the special breath, «body locks» (bandhas) and focused gaze (drishti).
- Concentration on asanas practicing purify the body.
- Breathing and bandhas («body locks») purify the nervous system.
- Drishti (focused gaze) and focus on inner state purify the mind.
During the practice it is important to keep dhyana (meditative state of consciousness).
Formally there are 6 series.
Newcomers start with the Primary series (Yoga Chikitsa), translated as Yoga Therapy.
This series purifies the body and the mind.
